I didn't post yesterday coz I felt a bit yucky....nauseous and just ick but I'm right as rain today so that's all good! A bit of an early night did the trick. I should remember that but I know I won't coz I have a tendancy to try and make the day last the longest time possible...."You're a long time dead" my Nanna would say....*L*
My rant today is not unknown to some people...It's about the bloody retail commercialism crap that brings us Easter stuff literally days after New Year. I heard what a Coles spokesperson said today.... Hot Cross Buns were in stores from 4 January "due to public demand" and now their Easter Eggs are starting to appear on aisle ends (the greatest form of retail marketing that there is!) Woolworths also had the Hot Cross Buns from 4 Jan but "our Easter Eggs are a couple of weeks away"....
OMFG!!! Who is this public they speak of? Who, in their right bloody mind wants to start thinking about Easter when we've just all spent, eaten and drunk every last cent that we had. This is not about the religious celebration that Christians partake in surely??? It's not like you need to post hot cross buns to people overseas and i'm damn sure you wouldn't be sending fragile chocolate through the sea mail option....Can you just imagine it at the other end? That's the only conceivable reason I can come up with as to why anyone would need to have access to this stuff 3 months out of the actual event. It pisses me off....Can you tell? *lol*
Trouble is...people WILL buy the fkn stuff.... Personally, I love hot cross buns....toasted and dripping in butter...what's better? I don't like chocolate so that's not even an issue for me but still, I have refused point blank, for as many years as I can remember to buy hot cross buns or easter eggs until it's a decent time away from the event. Hot cross buns i'll admit get a 2 week grace *lol* but that's not so bad is it? Easter eggs, well I hardly even buy them. The price is outrageous! I usually get a little chocolate token for my nephews and buy them something really Aunty like such as socks! *L* My girls know they get money and maybe a tiny chocolate but even that shits me to death!
You might be wondering why I would even bother with this Christian belief (the same goes for Christmas actually). You might (or might not) be interested to know that both these celebrations pre-date Christianity (i'm not having a go....each to their own) and are Pagan celebrations which the modern day churches (albeit a yonk ago) have adopted as their own.
Easter and Christmas have different names in my faith (Oestara and Yule) and are celebrations of changes of season, life and death etc. than they are anything to do with Jesus.
Anyway, I digress. My point is....and I do have a point *lol* (get to it....yes, I know) My point is, why can't people just NOT buy this stuff until say, even, 3 weeks out of the event.....and maybe that would send a message? While we continue to allow retailers to bombard us with constant "holiday" paraphenalia and whilst we continue to buy it, there's never going to be a change.
There's heaps of Australia day stuff out there right now. That's fine with me.
But you watch, Mother's day I think is next on the commercial agenda....Let's see if it overlaps with the Easter stuff. I bet it will.
How fkn annoying.
That's all.....the end! *S*

OMG yes I completely agree. I too would like to know who this public is demanding Hot Cross Buns 2 weeks after Christmas and 3 months before Easter????
ReplyDeleteI know that Paganism outdates Christianity however I really had no idea that the Pagan celebrations Oestara and Yule were adopted by the modern day churches as Easter and Christmas. I can link the word Yule with Christmas but have no idea what it means but have never heard of Oestara although looking at the word you can kind of see how they got Easter out of it. Really interested to hear more about Paganism.
As for the photo of Johnny Depp, not a huge fan of him but holy crap he looks mighty fine in that photo lol.
Oh yeah, one more thing...wondering how many of the Australia Day items advertised are actually made in Australia???
Pagans also use the term Candlema and I do believe that Christmas is used in the traditional faiths because of the word Christ.... Yule has long been used with respect to Christmas ("yuletide glow" for instance). It's a most interesting faith but it also runs parallel to other beliefs that I hold great store in such as Native American Indian traditions and Buddhism.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you agree with me regards the bullshit commercialism. I'm sure whomever this public is that are demanding such idiocy are all in the minds of the retailers...still, unless we all make a stand, there's buckleys chance of changing anything. I just will continue to hold my ground! *lol*
Gosh....Not a Depp fan? I'm deeply hurt! *lol* It's odd how much I adore him and not just his looks (although damn, that's not hurting any) but his acting ability is sublime. Surpremely talented man.
I know you're the hugest of Robbie fans and yeah, I like him too but not like you! *l* Just as well I spose that we all differ coz how awful would it be fighting about the same man all the time?
And yeah....absolutely odds on that the great majority of Australia day items (or anything bearing an Australian symbol) are made overseas. Again, what can you do? If you want to show your patriotism, short of making something yourself, then you gotta buy it I guess....It sucks but then, would we pay the price it would cost to produce the same items here? I probably would be outraged once all the mark ups and considerations had been made.....It's a quandry all right.
You're a gem for reading my crap Kellie :) x
** oops sorry....Candlemas......
ReplyDeleteI looked up Yule and Ostara last night after reading your blog, it's so very interesting. I kind of have my own belief system that i've found to be true for myself. It doesn't fit under one particular religion in fact a lot of what I believe is taken from numerous religions or faiths, it just rings true for me, does that make sense? For example I believe in God although I couldn't tell you what he/she looks like or anything, more along the lines of an energy or a force maybe, probably not from the earthly realm but not necessarily alien either, maybe I haven't completely decided what God is yet but I'm sure it will all fall into place one day. One thing I find amusing though is that people are continuously fighting over religion and God, that theirs is the one true God but if you look at lots of different religions and faiths they all have so many similarities. Maybe if everyone was just happy to believe what was true for them instead of trying to convince everyone else that theirs is the only true God a hell of a lot of the worlds problems would be solved I think!
ReplyDeleteI really don't know anything about Wicca, maybe learning about it will fill in some unanswered questions for me?
I find alot of truth in Buddhism, I certainly believe in reincarnation, only have to look at both my girls to know thats real. When Alycia was little she used to always talk about her other Mummy and say to me "remember my other Mummy, remember, she wasn't there to catch me". There used to be this Christian ad on tv with calming music and beautiful tranquil pictures and one was of this mountain and she always used to say that that was where she was when she fell off the mountain and her Mummy wasn't there to catch her! As for Lily, well if I had a dollar for everytime someone has said to me that she's been here before I would be a very wealthy person. From the day she was born I felt that about her, she was always so calm and just seemed to go through the motions like she had done it all before and new there was no point making a fuss. Funny hey?
Well I think I have carried on for quite long enough now, got carried away for a bit I think.
Thanks for posting The Eight Sabbats, look forward to learning more xo
That's so cool Kellie! Your belief system runs quite parallel to mine in a lot of respects.
ReplyDeleteI couldn't get my head around the whole "Jesus story". I certainly believe there was someone called Jesus but I just can't go with the bible and all of that but yep, for sure, I think there's some sort of entity out there and I guess that's why I latched onto Paganism and in particular, the Wiccan path because it's so open and magical and the thought that there are both God and Goddess infinitely appealed to me.
I come from a very spiritual family. Well, actually, the females of my family are spiritual and whilst most of them hold with the Christian version of what is out there etc, there is something we all have in common and that is: Reincarnation and Spirit.
I have been to many a medium and many different types events where people contact spirit and I have personally had too many deadly accurate messages and readings for me not to believe.
I actually do believe that Katrina is my Mum's Nanny reincarnated. Like Alycia, she used to say remarkable things and I distinctly recall as a toddler her saying to my Mum......like clear as day.....I used to be your Nanny didn't I Nanny? Plus she would do this little other "role play" thing where she became this other person and I honestly believe that character was a previous life personality.
Anyway, I think it's great that you have your own belief system and I agree with you entirely that too much emphasis is put on the different factions arguing and carrying on. Just let each other be and it would be such a kinder place.
I really appreciate your imput btw. And you post as much as you want coz I'm really enjoying reading you! :) xx
